Pharmacological Interventions

Once the diagnosis of a cognitive disorder is made, it is imperative to initiate immediate treatment to help maintain the highest possible quality of life, both for the individual and his or her family.  Several medication alternatives are available to help slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias and to improve the person’s ability to function.  To the extent that depression accounts for a client’s problems and presentation, alleviation of the mood disorder may minimize its impact on long term cognitive functioning.  Furthermore, as the syndromes progress, behavioral issues often develop, including agitation, paranoia, hallucinations, and depression.  These issues also frequently overshadow some of the other limitations and problems that occur as a result of the disease.  They also lead to family turmoil, anger, and even inadvertent abuse.

Memory Disorders Therapy Group:

The latter stages in the journey of life may very well be the most difficult, and being given the diagnosis of a mild cognitive impairment or dementia disorder may make it even more difficult.  In the context of the group members can learn compensatory strategies to help cope with the limitations inherent to their disorders.

Caregiver Therapy Groups

Cognitive disorders and dementias affect not only those with memory disorders.  They also invariably impact family and friends.  Spouses, children, and significant others are often put in the position of being the primary care giver, a demanding and exhausting role, which has a large rate of burnout and depression.  Furthermore, caregiver burnout is one the fastest growing psychiatric syndromes in our country.

Our caregiver support groups target the difficulties and hardships affecting those persons, to allow them to better care for themselves as they assist their loved ones.  Together we share our challenges and difficulties, and work together to develop ways to care for our loved ones without forgetting to care for ourselves.

Specialized Therapies

Therapy for couples, families, and caretakers are also available.  Dr. Podell, the center’s medical director has developed specialized treatment approaches for people who find themselves in close relationships with depressed and impaired loved ones.  The treatments are designed for individuals, couples, and families depending on needs and circumstances.   They are powerful methods that can stop the hostile, distressing dysfunctional relating that develops in such circumstances and addresses the depression that both caretakers and afflicted patients inevitably experience.

Consultations

In addition to the day to day challenges of caring for loved ones with Alzheimer’s Disease or other dementias practical and legal concerns typically arise.  Our staff of professionals can provide answers to some of clients and family’s most pressing questions, such as placement, competency, legal issues, and independence.

Maintenance Services

Aging is a dynamic process, and so are the syndromes and disorders diagnosed and treated through the Center for Bio-Behavioral Science.  We can continue to follow clients to monitor changes in their functioning and their response to treatment.  Such monitoring allows for specific tailoring of interventions to the individual client.  The frequency of our monitoring will depend on the functional status of the person and the complexity of his or her picture but is usually done quarterly or semi-annually.
